Seeking a Community Organizer, Tobacco
AADAP- Asian American Drug Abuse Program is looking to hire a community organizer for tobacco prevention. The job is two-fold:
(1) The COMMUNITY ORGANIZING side is focused on outreach and education to middle and high school youth on tobacco.
(2) The POLICY ADVOCACY side is about passing Tobacco Retail License ordinance and/or amendments in Redondo Beach, Hawaiian Gardens, and El Segundo and other cities (i.e. making sure retailers do not sell to minors). You would be working with LA County, elected officials, law enforcement, community coalitions and residents.
You must have a car. We prefer bilingual applicants, either Spanish or an API language.

Unit : Prevention Unit
A. SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Community Organizer mobilizes target communities to impact change around tobacco issues through advocacy and policy based campaigns. The Community Organizer implements a strategic plan under the supervision of the Prevention Coordinator. B
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. TARGET AREA ORGANIZING (70%):
a. Conducts comprehensive community assessments of assigned target area.
b. Recruit, train, and guide youth and adult volunteer base through community based tobacco campaigns.
c. Mobilize community leaders and residents around specific organizing efforts as appropriate.
d. Implement a strategic action plan involving youth and adult volunteer base.
e. Develop and provide tobacco based presentations on campaign efforts to target community.
f. Participate in monthly tobacco coalition meetings and trainings as required.
g. Revise action plan according to emerging community needs, issues, and problems.
h. Conduct tobacco policy and advocacy efforts in targeted community.
2. COUNTY-WIDE ORGANIZING (15%):
a. Provide technical assistance to other organizing bodies as assigned.
b. Conduct leadership development, skills building, and coalition building efforts as assigned.
c. Conduct advocacy around local, state, and federal policy decisions.
3. ADMINISTRATIVE (10%):
a. Comply with City, County, State and Federal contractual agreements.
b. Submit billing reports and other reporting requirements as assigned.
c. Maintain accurate files on organizing activities and evaluations.
4. UNIT AND AGENCY (5%):
a. Attend Unit and Agency sponsored meetings and functions. b. Represent AADAP at local, state and federal forums, conferences, and other activities. c. Perform other duties as assigned.
C. QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES):
1. REQUIRED:
a. Four-years of college education related to field or equivalent work experience related to field.
b. Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring.
c. Valid California Drivers License and current automobile liability insurance.
d. Must have at least three (3) years of recovery or a drug free lifestyle as of the date of application.
e. Must be able to work with people of diverse cultural, educational, social, and economic backgrounds.
f. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in computer operations.
g. Demonstrated community organizing experience and background.
h. Ability to pass criminal background check to work with children and adolescents.
2. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
a. Experience in community organizing and advocacy efforts.
b. Knowledge of substance abuse (particularly tobacco) and related issues.
c. Experience with research and evaluation methodologies.
