Seeking a Community Organizer, Tobacco



AADAP- Asian American Drug Abuse Program is looking to hire a community organizer for tobacco prevention. The job is two-fold:

(1) The COMMUNITY ORGANIZING side is focused on outreach and education to middle and high school youth on tobacco.

(2) The POLICY ADVOCACY side is about passing Tobacco Retail License ordinance and/or amendments in Redondo Beach, Hawaiian Gardens, and El Segundo and other cities (i.e. making sure retailers do not sell to minors). You would be working with LA County, elected officials, law enforcement, community coalitions and residents.

A. SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Community Organizer mobilizes target communities to impact change around tobacco issues through advocacy and policy based campaigns. The Community Organizer implements a strategic plan under the supervision of the Prevention Coordinator. B

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. TARGET AREA ORGANIZING (70%):

a. Conducts comprehensive community assessments of assigned target area.
b. Recruit, train, and guide youth and adult volunteer base through community based tobacco campaigns.
c. Mobilize community leaders and residents around specific organizing efforts as appropriate.
d. Implement a strategic action plan involving youth and adult volunteer base.
e. Develop and provide tobacco based presentations on campaign efforts to target community.
f. Participate in monthly tobacco coalition meetings and trainings as required.
g. Revise action plan according to emerging community needs, issues, and problems.
h. Conduct tobacco policy and advocacy efforts in targeted community.

2. COUNTY-WIDE ORGANIZING (15%):

a. Provide technical assistance to other organizing bodies as assigned.
b. Conduct leadership development, skills building, and coalition building efforts as assigned.
c. Conduct advocacy around local, state, and federal policy decisions.

3. ADMINISTRATIVE (10%):

a. Comply with City, County, State and Federal contractual agreements.
b. Submit billing reports and other reporting requirements as assigned.
c. Maintain accurate files on organizing activities and evaluations.

4. UNIT AND AGENCY (5%):

a. Attend Unit and Agency sponsored meetings and functions. b. Represent AADAP at local, state and federal forums, conferences, and other activities. c. Perform other duties as assigned.

C. QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES):
1. REQUIRED:
a. Four-years of college education related to field or equivalent work experience related to field.
b. Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring.
c. Valid California Drivers License and current automobile liability insurance.
d. Must have at least three (3) years of recovery or a drug free lifestyle as of the date of application.
e. Must be able to work with people of diverse cultural, educational, social, and economic backgrounds.
f. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in computer operations.
g. Demonstrated community organizing experience and background.
h. Ability to pass criminal background check to work with children and adolescents.

2. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

a. Experience in community organizing and advocacy efforts.
b. Knowledge of substance abuse (particularly tobacco) and related issues.

Advocate – Outreach Harm Reduction Specialist

Job Description

Job Title: Advocate – Outreach Harm Reduction Specialist Dept: Harm Reduction Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

The Advocate – Outreach Harm Reduction Specialist is charged with increasing community awareness and access to HIV/AIDS and HCV testing and care through harm reduction education, HIV/AIDS prevention or disease management, and linkage to primary care. Through street outreach and community events, the Advocate will engage homeless adults to determine their HIV/AIDS risk and/or status and need for additional services and/or housing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide targeted case management; coordinate and implement primary health care, mental health and/or recovery support services with from 12-24 members diagnosed with or at risk of HIV/AIDS

2. Coordinate HIV/HCV testing events every other month

3. Conduct weekly HIV/AIDS groups focusing on education, harm reduction, prevention, and disease management

4. Provide street outreach to homeless individuals with the objective of engaging them, as appropriate, in HIV/AIDS testing, support, harm reduction behaviors, and linkage to primary care

5. Develop effective, trusting relationship with members utilizing motivational interviewing to encourage engagement, with a focus on facilitating independence and procuring needed services and housing

6. Respond to community referrals from sources including, but not limited to, 211, BID, and LAPD

7. Assist in the recruitment, screening, assessment, and enrollment of members into the HOPWA program, including orientation to program policies, community resources, and goals

8. Collaborate with each member to develop an individual service plan and review and update the plan quarterly and upon completion of goals

9. Maintain a current, thorough knowledge of community resources and utilize them to provide comprehensive, wrap-around services to members

10. Work cooperatively and cohesively with other members of the HOPWA and emergency and transitional housing teams, including participation in staff meetings and trainings

11. Maintain up-to-date, accurate, and complete data, progress notes, and files that include all information required according to agency and regulatory service standards

12. Ensure that all member paperwork and data collection is complete and up to date in the agency database

13. Produce monthly and quarterly reports (e.g., HOPWA, HMIS)

14. Complete all documentation of services evidencing a minimum of 65% of work hours in direct member service provision

QUALIFICATIONS

1. High School diploma or GED; Associates or Bachelors degree preferred

2. Minimum of four years’ experience working with homeless or formerly homeless individuals, preferably those living with mental illness, substance addictions, or HIV/AIDS

3. Current, valid California Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record

4. Able to work with minimum supervision

5. Detail oriented with excellent time management, organizational, written, verbal, and computer skills

6. Able to obtain and maintain CPR/1st Aid certification

7. Minimum 30 WPM typing speed preferred

The Nurse will take a leadership role in medication and health issues at the Lodge and Frank Rice Access Center and will ensure the quality and adequacy of nursing services provided to members at these sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Document all services provided in clinically-appropriate progress notes Provide medication management to individuals including but not limited to medication administration, treatment and monitoring of side effects, monitoring and supportive services to increase compliance, etc.; inform psychiatrist, case manager, and mental health provider, as appropriate, of medication concerns/issues

Coordinate Lamp psychiatric services and appointments by working closely with psychiatrist and providing follow-up consultation to members

Train and provide indirect oversight of medication staff leads at Lamp sites

Prepare and ensure proper completion of the Nursing/Psychiatry Initial Intake documentation, including: Initial Medication Support Service form, Outpatient Medication Review form, Completion of psychiatrist MED goal on CCCP with doctor signature, Completion of nursing goal with signature (if applicable), Change of diagnosis (if applicable), Case management notes, Lab requisition requests and other associated documents, as requested,

Maintain medication logs and Lodge and FRAC medication storage in compliance with safety standards and industry standards of care

Provide medication consultation to staff and members as requested

Develop and conduct Health/Wellness and Medication Management groups

Develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records Coordinate medication support services with staff and provide direct linkage and/or support to advocates to ensure that members attend medical appointments for psychiatric medication monitoring, blood work, and obtaining psychiatric medications when prescribed

Maintain confidentiality of member files per HIPAA and all applicable guidelines

QUALIFICATIONS
Proof of graduation from an approved nursing program with an associate’s degree or equivalent
California license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse
Minimum two years’ psychiatric nursing experience working with clients experiencing chronic homelessness and substance abuse
Able to manage multiple tasks, projects, and priorities effectively while working independently
Detail oriented with excellent time management, organizational, written, verbal, and computer skills
Able to demonstrate acceptance toward members and a high degree of cultural sensitivity to their needs
Able to develop patient care programs within the clinical policies and program objectives and relating them to the funding requirements
Current, valid California Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record
Able to learn quickly and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies and with minimal supervision
Experience completing medication logs to accepted industry standards
Excellent customer service skills

Advocate Outreach Case Manager (Skid Row)
Lamp Community ends homelessness of Los Angeles' most vulnerable individuals, primarily adults with mental illness, through a continuum of services and housing, enabling them to reach their highest level of self-sufficiency and community integration.

The Outreach Advocate will work with unsheltered homeless, mentally ill members, including those with co-occurring disorders, to obtain services needed to overcome the cycle of homelessness and the impact of barriers to housing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide street outreach to homeless with the objective of engaging individuals to determine their eligibility for street-to-permanent housing utilizing the vulnerability index 2. Build a relationship with client utilizing motivational interviewing to encourage engagement with needed services and housing 3. Respond to community referrals from including but not limited to: 211, BID and LAPD, and DMH 4. Work with a partner at all times during street outreach and spend the majority of the outreach shift working various hours as needed to engage the most vulnerable homeless 5. Assist in the screening, assessment, and enrollment of members, including orientation to program policies, community resources, and goals 6. For enrolled members, develop and review an individual service plan for each member to be reviewed and updated quarterly and upon completion 7. Assist management and other team members with ongoing program evaluation and with fairly and effectively enforcing policies and rules 8. Maintain a current, thorough knowledge of community resources and utilize these to provide comprehensive, wrap-around services to members 9. Work hands on in involving members in daily activities and scheduled appointments, budgeting, facilitating socialization, health maintenance, sense of community, and progress in mental health and recovery 10. Work cooperatively and cohesively in a multi-disciplinary team, including participation in daily staff meetings and trainings 11. Work in partnership with multiple service and housing providers toward the goal of placing 65% of individuals identified and engaged in services in permanent housing

Minimum of four years experience working with homeless individuals, preferably those living with mental illness and or substance addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience 3. The Benefits Specialist assists Lamp Community members in obtaining and maintaining all benefits to which they are entitled. This position works with the department supervisor to maintain their case load, ensure that each member’s benefits are up to date, and educate and assist the community in referring people to the program or applying for benefits directly.

The Lodge Property Manager is responsible for managing Lamp’s Lodge building and promoting positive resident relations by demonstrating a friendly, fair, and consistent manner in all interactions. The Property Manager also leads the agency’s efforts in promoting safety compliance for members and staff across all sites. In addition, the Property Manager is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and repairs for the Lodge Property, and will assist with similar tasks for other agency buildings and facilities to help ensure that Lamp operates clean, safe, and well-maintained facilities that meet industry and funding source standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Complete work orders, janitorial and maintenance services, and other capital improvements at the Lodge in coordination with maintenance staff and contracted individuals; expedite preparation of apartments for new residents
2. Perform inspection of and preventative maintenance/repair tasks for the Lodge monthly or as needed, including electrical,  plumbing, and other essential systems and equipment, to minimize unplanned downtime, solve problems in a timely manner, and identify areas in need of improvement
3. Complete intake and lease up of new tenants including income, eligibility, and subsidy documentation; facilitate lease renewals and eligibility recertification with tenants, partners, and funding sources
4. Serve as the agency Safety Committee Chair: direct the safety committee, retain all safety-related documents, advise management on problem correction, schedule monthly safety meetings, follow-up on tasks assigned to committee members to ensure completion, and distribute meeting minutes
5. Maintain current, accurate tenant files, records of the condition of systems, incident reports, inspections, and other facilities-related paperwork; prepare monthly reports on facilities conditions, inspections, and work orders completed
6. Serve as agency liaison with and primary contact for outside agencies on safety matters; promote safety awareness and safe work practices across the agency; formulate and suggest agency-wide work safety standards, and collaborate with supervisors to enforce procedures consistently
7. Develop and maintain a Lamp property management manual, including policies and procedures for the use of supplies, equipment, and maintenance
8. Build rapport with residents and Lamp staff to increase resident integration in the community, successful retention of housing, and compliance with rules and regulations
9. Ensure that lease-ups and rent collections are completed in accordance with industry standards; as needed, collaborate with attorneys and complete required legal paperwork on matters relating to evictions
10. Coordinate move-ins and move-outs: inspect vacated units, prepare lists of items that need to be addressed


QUALIFICATIONS
1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Minimum two years’ related experience in real estate and/or property management
3. Minimum two years’ experience as a Facilities Maintenance Engineer in a commercial building, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
4. Able to perform commercial building maintenance including: plumbing, light construction and structure repair, routine electrical, preventative maintenance tasks, and problem diagnosis
5. Working knowledge of workplace safety and illness and injury prevention practices
6. Detail oriented with good time management, organizational, written, verbal, interpersonal, and computer skills
7. Able to learn quickly and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies and with minimal supervision
8. Self-starter with the ability to stay ahead of the curve and thrive in fast-paced work environment
9. Able to exercise good judgment to prevent and/ or to handle emergency situations
10. Current, valid California Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record

Cloud and Fire Ministries is a Christian nonprofit organization that reaches out to youth who live in gang communities. This small but growing organization is in need of an Office Manager who will help manage the daily operations of our highly collaborative team environment. The successful candidate will be extremely structured and able to organize systems and tasks for other personnel. Must be able to create spreadsheets, calendars, task lists, and manage daily as well as long-term tasks in multiple departments. We are looking for a mature, ministry-minded, individual with life experience adequate to inform the daily rigors of working in a front-line ministry. Will be responsible for the creation and implementation of budgets, issues dealing with HR and employment law, and measurements of program success. Therefore, must have previous managment experience. Some experience in the nonprofit sector would be greatly desired. Knowledge of Latino culture and basic ability to communicate in Spanish would be helpful, though not absolutely necessary. Some previous marketing experience beneficial. We are looking for a creative problem solver who can work in a demanding environment with limited resources and a high degree of challenge. Housing Needed from August to December


This is an email/phone call Kevin received from Amy and Jon (they gave permission to list their need on our site):

My husband, Jon, and I will be moving to Los Angeles from Columbus, OH on August 22 to begin the Master of Arts in Transformational Urban Leadership program through Azusa Pacific. We have been struggling with finding housing and were hoping that your church might be able to help us out. Our biggest challenge is that we will only be in LA for one semester August - December because the majority of the program we will be doing missions work overseas. Because of this we have not been able to find an affordable landlord to lease short-term. At this point we are praying for anything to open up since we'll be there in 2 weeks! The one key thing is that wherever we stay, we need to be able to get to the downtown campus of APU (near Wilshire and Normandie) via public transportation as we won't have a car. 

Jon and I have been married for 8 months. We graduated from The Ohio State University in 2011. Jon studied construction management and I studied social work. CLIENT SERVICE SPECIALIST

The Fuller Foundation wants to change the world for the better.  Why?  Because we believe that God calls us to love one another and a big part of that is simply serving others.  How do we serve others?  By supporting individuals and organizations in their desires to use their God given resources to help others.  In other words, we promote Christian giving.  And we love it!  What do we do to promote Christian giving?  We provide our wonderful clients with the following professional services: giving education, investment management, trust administration, and gift and estate planning.

We are looking for someone to join our client services team.  Ideally, that person will be self-motivated, detail-oriented, hard-working, team-oriented, entrepreneurial and, above all, must have a servant’s heart.

Working at the Foundation means every day will be different.  In order to serve our wonderful clients well, you must enjoy multi-tasking.  Your job will include communicating with clients, producing reports and presentations, editing data, periodically greeting visitors and numerous other tasks that support our clients’ goals.

Moving--Do you need furniture?


I have some old furniture that I'm trying to get rid of before I move out this Sunday (7/29). Do you need furniture? I scheduled a pickup from Salvation Army for their first available day (next Saturday) but it would be ideal if I can give them away this week.

Student in need of housing for June/July/August

A female student is in need of housing for June-August for rent or a family that would be willing to rent a room for the summer. She will be working Monday-Thursday as an internship at Good Clean Fun Pictures, so she would even be in a position to help out with babysitting for a family on the weekends and attend New City Church on Sundays. Los Angeles Church Planting

God has been growing New City Church of LA and I believe we have become an inclusive gospel-centered community here in downtown.  But our vision is not just for downtown.  We want to spur a church planting movement in Los Angeles so that there is a gospel driven church in every neighborhood in Metro Los Angeles.  There are 114 neighborhoods in the City of LA and with the surrounding Metro LA communities, there are about 200 neighborhoods.  Some of these neighborhoods are as small as 10,000 and some are as large as 220,000 people.  We want to plant a neighborhood church that brings people together in every neighborhood, that becomes the light of Jesus in that neighborhood, that preaches the good news of Jesus in that neighborhood, and that becomes good news by serving that neighborhood.

We are going to do this in partnership with Stadia, a non-denominational church planting organization. They have committed to put in $50,000 per every church plant with LA CPN.

God has blessed this vision.  We have put together 10 churches so far that are committed to this vision.  We are calling it the Los Angeles Church Planting Network.  The churches that have committed to this vision are:

New City Church of LA
Christian Assembly
Shepherd of the Hills
Discovery Church
Real Life Church
First Christian Church of Newbury Park
Knott Ave Church
Diamond Canyon Church
Park Ave Church
Huntington Beach Christian Church

I believe we are just getting started.  We are talking to more churches and more individuals.  If you know churches that might be interested, please let me know.  Among these churches, we have raised over $240,000 for the first church plant (including Stadia's contribution).  And we are on our way to raising the money needed to plant the second church plant.  Our goal is to plant 1-2 churches every year.
